Synopsis

Atas Nama Daun (In the Name of the Leaf) looks beyond marijuana labels as it exposes the astonishing ways the plant has been defined over many years, by many people of different professions, in five chapters. Narrated by Tio Pakusadewo, an actor who was himself a victim of drug criminalisation.

The project began as a visual exploration of the plant and of the issue studied in Aristo Pangaribuan's paper, 'Causes and Consequences of Mass Criminalization of Marijuana in Indonesia'. Over many years the crew followed living and departed subjects across many locations; post-production was completed during the pandemic.

An independent documentary, made without commercial purpose and with no association with any party outside Anatman Pictures.

Director's statement

I want to admit that there was a time when I enjoyed recreational marijuana; it was arguably one of my first meditative experiences. In 2006 I even exhibited a photo essay called 'Manusia' at Galeri Foto Jurnalistik Antara, reflecting on human existence through portraits of marijuana users. I no longer use it, and I no longer smoke. I found other ways to contemplate life, meditation among them.

When I learned from Aristo's research that prisons were 600% over capacity because of drug users, mostly cannabis, what began as a visual exploration became personal. Had I been unlucky in my youth, my life might be very different now. Meeting the people in this film opened my eyes: the cannabis issue is not only about pleasure. There are historical, political, legal, medical and humanitarian aspects pounding on the hearts of those who care.

    Fidelis Ari Suderwato

    Out of love for his wife Yeni, who had syringomyelia, Fidelis taught himself to extract cannabis. Her condition slowly improved, until Fidelis was arrested.

    Dwi Pertiwi

    Dwi, mother of the late Musa, a child with cerebral palsy who never had access to medical cannabis, joins other mothers in asking the Constitutional Court to revise the law, a glimmer of hope for other children.
