SYNOPSIS
Michelle is the second child and also the first daughter in a family of Mongondow tribe who has long migrated to Java. After decades of running a family restaurant serving Manado cuisine there, one day her mother brought news that she wanted to return to the village and intended to pass on the restaurant to one of her children.
Michelle, who has been the most responsible as a leader based on the customary practices of Mongondow women, suddenly faced the fact that her mother wanted to pass the restaurant down to Peter, her older brother and the eldest child in the family. Cultural friction in normative gender practices occurred when both Michelle and Peter felt entitled to become the successors of the restaurant. This conflict led Michelle to a discovery about her mother's past.
STATEMENT
This story reflects the issue that women still struggle to achieve their dreams and have equal opportunities as men. Women, despite proving themselves with capacities and work that are sometimes even more diligent than men, are still defeated by a patriarchal culture that is considered more capable.
The creed 'Women Support Women' for me as a woman is actually a necessity that is still difficult to achieve. This happens because of the weakness of tacit knowledge literacy in reading the space for the actualization of other women. In this story, support from fellow women becomes an irony, as it is actually undermined by other women who are so close, mother-daughter who are supposed to be at the forefront in creating space for realizing dreams.
In this story, Michelle is a woman who continuously 'loses'. Firstly, although the cultural literacy of the 'Mongondow tribe' actually provides opportunities for women to excel equally, Michelle fails to obtain such privilege. Michelle also loses among fellow women and domestically from her own mother and brothers.
This story represents the concern of mine as a female director and other women who at one point may be faced with such situations.
